What Is Vermicomposting?
Vermicomposting turns kitchen scraps into rich fertilizer using worms and microbes — here's how it works and what you need to get started.

If you've ever tossed a banana peel into the trash and felt a little guilty about it, vermicomposting might just change your life — or at least your relationship with food scraps. Put simply, vermicomposting is the process of using worms (and a bustling community of microorganisms) to break down organic waste into a dark, crumbly, nutrient-packed fertilizer called worm castings. It's faster than traditional composting, it fits in a small apartment, and it smells surprisingly fine when done right.
The Basics: What Actually Happens in a Worm Bin
When you drop a handful of vegetable peels into a worm bin, you're setting off a two-stage decomposition process. First, bacteria and fungi get to work softening and breaking down the material. Then the worms move in, eating the partially decomposed scraps along with the microbes themselves. What comes out the other end — worm castings — is loaded with beneficial bacteria, plant-available nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium, plus trace minerals that are often missing from synthetic fertilizers.
The worms don't work alone. Think of them as the bulldozers on a construction site — they move a lot of material and create structure — while the microbial community (bacteria, fungi, protozoa, nematodes) does the fine finishing work. Together, they convert raw scraps into something your garden genuinely loves.
Meet the Star: Red Wigglers
Not just any earthworm will do. The species you want is Eisenia fetida, commonly called the red wiggler or redworm. Unlike the nightcrawlers you dig up in your garden, red wigglers naturally live in the top few inches of soil where organic matter accumulates. They thrive in the same warm, moist, food-rich environment you'll create in a bin.
Red wigglers are prolific eaters. Under good conditions, a pound of worms (roughly 1,000 individuals) can process about half a pound of organic material per day. They also reproduce quickly, doubling their population every 60 to 90 days, which means your bin becomes more efficient over time without you doing much of anything.
Red wigglers prefer temperatures between 55°F and 77°F (13°C–25°C). Too hot or too cold and they slow down dramatically — or try to escape. Keep your bin indoors during extreme weather.
Vermicomposting vs. Hot Composting: What's the Difference?
Traditional hot composting relies on heat — a large pile (typically at least 3 feet by 3 feet) generates internal temperatures between 130°F and 160°F, which kills pathogens and weed seeds. It's great for big volumes of yard waste like leaves, straw, and woody prunings. But it takes up outdoor space, requires regular turning, and can take anywhere from one month to six months to finish.
Vermicomposting runs cold. Worms die above about 95°F, so the bin stays at ambient temperature. The trade-offs are clear:
- Smaller scale — a worm bin works on a balcony or under a kitchen sink.
- No turning required — worms aerate the material as they move through it.
- Faster for kitchen scraps — finished castings can be ready in 2 to 3 months.
- Not ideal for large volumes — if you have a big yard with lots of leaves and branches, hot composting still wins.
Many gardeners run both systems side by side — worms handle the daily kitchen waste indoors while a hot pile outside takes care of the bulkier yard debris.
What a Beginner Needs to Get Started
The good news: the startup cost is low and the learning curve is gentle. Here's the short list of what you actually need:
- A bin — you can buy a purpose-built flow-through worm bin or DIY one from a plastic storage tote with drainage holes drilled in the bottom. Aim for at least 10 gallons of volume.
- Bedding — shredded cardboard, aged paper, or coco coir works perfectly. Worms need a moist, carbon-rich material to live in. Aim for bedding that feels like a wrung-out sponge.
- Red wigglers — start with half a pound to one pound. Order from a reputable supplier or ask a local gardening group; they often have extras.
- Food scraps — fruit and vegetable peels, coffee grounds, tea bags, crushed eggshells. Avoid meat, dairy, oily foods, and citrus in large amounts when starting out.
Overfeeding is the most common beginner mistake. Add new scraps only after the previous batch is mostly gone, or you'll end up with an anaerobic, smelly mess. When in doubt, feed less.
What You Get Out of It
After 2 to 3 months, you'll start harvesting worm castings — a dark, earthy material that looks like coffee grounds and smells faintly of forest soil. Mix it into potting mix at a ratio of about 20 to 30 percent, sprinkle it around the base of garden plants, or brew it into "worm tea" (aerated casting extract) for a liquid fertilizer.
