How to Make a Worm Bed

Red wigglers are tough little composters, but they're picky about one thing: their bed. Get the bedding wrong and your worms will try to escape, slow down, or worse. Get it right and they'll munch through your kitchen scraps faster than you'd believe. Here's everything you need to know about how to make a worm bed that keeps your herd happy and productive.

What Worm Bedding Actually Does

Bedding isn't just filler — it's the worms' home, their moisture reservoir, and a carbon source they'll slowly eat alongside your food scraps. Good bedding holds enough water to keep worms hydrated without drowning them, and it stays loose enough for air to circulate so anaerobic (smelly) pockets don't form.

Think of it as the foundation layer of your bin. If you've ever read up on worm bin layers, you'll know that bedding sits at the bottom and top, sandwiching your food scraps and doing a lot of quiet work in between.

The Best Materials for Worm Bedding

You don't need to buy anything fancy. The best worm bedding is usually free or nearly free, and mixing two or three materials together gives you better results than using just one.

  • Shredded cardboard — corrugated cardboard torn into roughly 1–2 inch strips is the gold standard. It holds moisture well, breaks down slowly, and worms love hiding in the fluted inner layer. Remove any tape or staples and avoid wax-coated boxes.
  • Shredded paper — plain printer paper, newspaper (soy-based inks are fine), or paper bags all work. Shred it rather than crumpling it, because crumpled sheets mat together and block airflow.
  • Dry leaves — fallen leaves add texture and carbon. Crunch them up so they're not too large. Avoid fresh green leaves (too much nitrogen) and walnut leaves, which contain juglone, a natural compound toxic to many organisms including worms.
  • Coconut coir — the fibrous husk of coconuts, usually sold as a compressed brick. Expand it with water, then wring it out. Coir is pH-neutral, fluffy, and stays loose even when wet, making it a great binder for your bedding mix.

A good starting blend: about 50% shredded cardboard, 30% coir, and 20% shredded paper or dry leaves. This gives you structure, moisture retention, and airflow all at once.

Getting the Moisture Level Right

The classic moisture test is simple: grab a handful of bedding and squeeze it hard. You want just a few drops of water to come out — not a stream, not nothing. Worm scientists call this the wrung-out sponge standard, and it's a useful mental model. Bedding that's too dry will send worms searching for moisture (hello, escapees on your bin lid). Bedding that's too wet compacts, goes anaerobic, and smells like a drain.

Wet your materials before adding worms. Soak the cardboard strips in a bucket for a few minutes, then squeeze out the excess. Expand your coir brick according to the package, then wring handfuls before mixing. The goal is consistent moisture throughout, not wet patches and dry patches.

pH Cautions You Shouldn't Skip

Red wigglers thrive in a pH range of roughly 6.0 to 7.0 — slightly acidic to neutral. Most cardboard and paper bedding sits right in that zone. The trouble usually comes from what you add to the bin rather than the bedding itself.

  • Citrus peels and pineapple — acidic and contain d-limonene, which irritates worms. Use sparingly or avoid entirely in a new bin.
  • Protein-heavy scraps — meat and dairy rot fast and create acidic hot spots. Keep them out.
  • Crushed eggshells — a great buffer. A small handful every few weeks helps neutralize acidity and gives worms grit for digestion.

If your bin smells sour or your worms are crowding the lid, low pH is often the culprit. Sprinkle a light layer of agricultural lime or crushed eggshells over the bedding and give it a few days before assessing.

Checking Texture Over Time

Bedding doesn't stay fluffy forever. Every week or two, do a quick texture check: stick your hand a few inches into the bin and feel around. It should feel loose and crumbly — like a good potting mix. If it feels dense, slimy, or packed, it's time to act. Gently fluff the bedding with your hand or a small fork to reintroduce air pockets.

Also watch the overall volume. As worms work through the bin, bedding and food scraps break down into castings (the dark, earthy-smelling stuff). When castings make up most of the bin, it's time to harvest and refresh.

When and How to Refresh Bedding

Most active worm bins need a full bedding refresh every 3 to 6 months, depending on how many worms you have and how much you're feeding them. You'll know it's time when the bin is mostly dark castings with little visible bedding structure left.

  1. Stop feeding for 1–2 weeks to let worms process remaining food.
  2. Push finished castings to one side of the bin.
  3. Fill the empty side with fresh, pre-moistened bedding.
  4. Begin feeding only on the fresh-bedding side. Worms will migrate over within a week or two.
  5. Harvest the casting-heavy side, then refill it as new bedding for the next cycle.

One more thing worth mentioning: bedding refresh timing is closely tied to temperature.
