3. Bucket or Rubbermaid Bins

Two nested five-gallon buckets or a basic plastic storage tote with drilled holes is the cheapest possible entry point — often under ten dollars in materials. 4. Indoor vs. Outdoor Bins

Indoor bins prioritize smell control and small footprints. Outdoor bins can be larger but need insulation if you live somewhere with real winters — red wigglers die below about 40°F (4°C) and above 85°F (29°C). A shaded spot with stable temps is non-negotiable outdoors. Indoors, under a sink or in a closet works fine as long as you maintain moisture correctly.

Sizing: match scraps, not ambition

A healthy worm population processes roughly half its body weight in food per day. Start with one pound of worms per pound of weekly food scraps. Overfeed and you get anaerobic rot; underfeed and worms stay healthy but slow. Most starter bins suit a household producing under three pounds of scraps per week.

Airflow: the underrated dealbreaker

Drainage: leachate happens, plan for it

Every bin produces leachate — that dark liquid that drains out the bottom. It's not the same as worm tea, but it's also not toxic. What it is is guaranteed to make a mess if your bin has no collection tray. Stackable bins usually include one. Bucket bins need a second bucket nested inside with holes drilled above the bottom. Plastic is easy to clean and durable but can trap moisture if venting is poor. Wood breathes better and regulates temperature naturally, but it absorbs moisture and eventually rots (typically three to five years of heavy use).
